Program
1 day arrival in Yerevan
Arrival in Yerevan. Meeting with the driver at the airport for transfer to the hotel, check-in from midday.
After a short rest, start the excursion to Yerevan, one of the oldest cities in the world. Yerevan is often referred to as the "Pink City" and impresses visitors with its majestic Soviet architecture. The first stop in Yerevan will be at the Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex on Tsitsernakaberd Hill.
Next, we will visit the modern symbol of Yerevan, the Kaskad, a gigantic staircase (572 steps) that connects the center of Yerevan with the Monument district. From the top of the monument you can admire a splendid panorama of Yerevan and Mount Ararat.
Continuation of the visits with a walk along its beautiful streets, passing the Opera House, Republic Square and Abovyan Avenue. Return to the hotel and in the evening welcome dinner in a traditional Armenian restaurant. Overnight stay in hotel.
2 day Yerevan – Garni – Geghard – Echmiadzin – Yerevan
Departure from Yerevan and transfer to Garni, the only pagan temple in Armenia that survived the Christianization of the land in the 4th century. Your next stop is Geghard Monastery (meaning 'spear' in Armenian), a complex founded in the 4th century by Gregory the Illuminator near a sacred spring inside a cave.
Continuation to Echmiadzin (we point out possible restorations). According to many scholars, it was the first cathedral built in ancient Armenia. Visit the main Cathedral (the residence of the Catholicos, the supreme head of the Armenian Apostolic Church) and a museum full of Christian relics. Return to Yerevan. Overnight stay in hotel.
3 days Yerevan – Khor Virap – Areni – Noravank – Karahunj (Carahunge) – Goris
Transfer to Khor Virap where, according to legend, Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 14 years by King Tiridates III of Armenia. Saint Gregory was later appointed as the king's religious mentor, and as a result, Armenia became the first country to adopt Christianity as its official religion in 301 AD. The location of the monastery allows you to enjoy superb views of Mount Ararat.
The classic tour of Armenia continues with an excursion to Noravank Monastery. Located in one of the most beautiful areas of the country, the profile of the monastery contrasts beautifully with the rugged red rock cliffs.
Continue to the Areni Caves, where researchers found the world's oldest shoe in 2008, and visit the Hin Areniper winery to taste the delicious local wines. Transfer to Goris, stop along the way in Karahunj (Carahunge), also known as Zorats Karer. The site was inhabited from prehistoric to medieval times and consists of a prehistoric mausoleum and over 200 large stone monoliths, 80 of which have characteristic holes drilled near the top edge. The monument is surrounded by beautiful scenery, making it a popular destination among tourists. Arrival in Goris in the evening. Overnight stay in hotel.
4 day Goris – Tatev – Khndzoresk – Jermuk
In the morning visit Tatev, a 9th century monastery near the Vorotan River. To reach the monastery, we will travel on the 'Wings of Tatev' cable cars, the longest cable car in the world which is included in the Guinness Book of Records (5700 m, 12 minutes duration). Tatev was once the religious and political center of the region and the remote location of the monastery was strategically chosen to protect it from constant invasions.
Continue to Khndzoresk, a historic cave village located on a steep slope and made up of natural and artificial caves. Because many of the homes were dug on top of each other, a complex system of ropes and ladders was needed to allow people to reach many corners of the community. The Khndzoresk cave village remained the largest village in eastern Armenia until the 20th century. Next, transfer to the mountain spa town of Jermuk. Overnight stay in hotel.
5 day Jermuk – Selim Pass – Noratus Cemetery (Noraduz) – Sevanavank – Yerevan
After breakfast, continuation of classic tour of Armenia to Selim Pass, also known as Orbelian Caravanserai, located at a height of 2410 meters above sea level. Built in the 14th century, it was one of the main points along the Armenian Silk Road. After crossing the pass you will visit the medieval Noratus cemetery, where you can see the khachkars (Armenian medieval cross stones). Khachkars are carved with unique symbols and represent the extraordinary skill of medieval Armenian craftsmen. Since 2010, khachkars have been inscribed on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.
Stop at Sevanavank Monastery, which sits on a narrow rocky peninsula near the northwestern shore of Lake Sevan, one of the largest freshwater alpine lakes in Eurasia. The road runs along the beautiful coast of the lake, which attracts many locals and tourists all year round. Afterwards, return to Yerevan. Overnight stay in hotel.
